Today I’m talking about dividend stocks — what they are and whether you should trade them.
Dividends are basically the profits that a company has. So why does this matter to you? Does a dividend mean you should invest your hard-earned money?
If you invest in a profitable company’s dividend stock, they pay you a sum out of their profits. The better the company, the more profitable they should be — and the more opportunity for you ... right?
Not necessarily.
Some of the best companies don’t actually make money. In fact, they lose money. So what makes them so valuable?
Profits aren't the only important indicator. When a company isn’t considered profitable, its value can be based on multiple factors: users, products, market share, etc.
It all comes down to the company’s potential. And potential isn’t always a sure thing.
So while dividends can be enticing due to the opportunity for what appears to be consistent profits — you can still lose money if your investment value drops more than the dividend pays.
I tend to stay away from dividends. I prefer volatile stock prices with reasonably predictable patterns. But that’s my niche ... I encourage you to learn about everything so you can find yours!
How do you feel about dividend stocks? Have you found your niche — and if so, what is it? Drop a comment below and let me know!
