Zapp & Roger Had Auto-Tune Sound Before T-PAIN + Roger's TRAGIC Ending At The Hands of His Brother

In the Netflix docuseries called This Is Pop, T-Pain said that Usher told him that he ruined music for real singers by using Auto-Tune. Hearing this opinion sent T-Pain into a 4 year depression. Thankfully, he got over that.

But I must admit that I was surprised to hear any singer have such a harsh criticism of Auto-Tune because technologies very similar to it had been around in R&B, pop and Funk music for roughly 40 years.

Roger Troutman of Zapp & Roger was one of the innovators in voice box technology in the 1980's and he was praised for it. In the 1990's artists like Tupac, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and even Johnny Gill wanted to collaborate with him to get his computerized vocals on their tracks. The future was looking bright for Roger Troutman in the late 1990's until his brother, Larry Troutman, took his life.
