It only seemed more difficult because her career got off to a start while she was latched to a man who wasn't in her league. Ted White was insecure, abusive and jealous of his wife's success. No one in Aretha's inner circle wanted Ted White to be with Aretha. Numerous entertainers who were Aretha's contemporaries spoke out against Ted while she remained silent.
