At the time of this recording, season 2 of Netflix’s Regency-era period show, Bridgerton, is upon us. Clearly a fictional piece with an over representation of black people in England’s aristocracy, it is nonetheless a hit. Even though black people are over represented in this story, in it there ARE black characters who are based on real people who lived at that time. One of those characters is Will MondriCH, who was the Duke’s boxing instructor in in season 1.
He is based on the real-life Bill Richmond. An American born slave who went on to become Britain’s first black sports star and whose real life is better than fiction.
