All that the Filipinos would have to do was buy bottles of Pepsi, save their bottle caps, then wait for the 3 digit number on the inside of their bottle cap to be read on the news. Then after their number was read, they would go to the Pepsi offices to claim their 1 million pesos - roughly $38,000 USD.
Now obviously, the citizens of the Philippines knew that EVERYBODY couldn’t win.
But then, one night A LOT of people did win. Hundreds of thousands “won” when the numbers 3-4-9 were read on TV. Pepsi had made an error - an error that had at least 500,000 people winning 1 million pesos. But surely the people of the Philippines were smart enough to know that this was CLEARLY an error, and everything was cool because they were all just having fun and enjoying the cola. Surely they would be reasonable and let that mistake slide, right?
Well, Pepsi underestimated the desperation that poverty breeds.
Before the Numbers Fever RIOTS ended, several would be injured and at least 5 people would be dead…all because Pepsi wanted to surpass Coca Cola in sales.
Let’s get into it.
