1888 was a good year for Isidor Straus, as was reported in an article in the New York Tribune. He would ring in the new year starting in the venture that is the reason why we know his name today. On January 3rd of that year, Isidor Straus and his brother, Nathan, became partners R H Macy and Company…or as most of us call it, simply Macy’s. The Straus brothers vowed that they would carry on the same business practices as Mr. Macy had done. For instance, running it as a cash only enterprise, and they promised that operations would be so much the same that their suppliers, employees, and customers would not even notice that there had been a change in leadership.
Just to be clear, Isidor had already been successful in business and politics before this point. But now we know why he was always referred to as being the owner or co-owner of Macy’s who died on the Titanic.
This is the story of what witnesses saw of the last moments of Isidor and Ida Straus.
It's another Hot Mess History story from Ti.
