On The Gilded Age, Season 2, Episode 3, we saw a reimagining of the US debut night of Oscar Wilde’s play called Vera. All of the characters on the show hated it. And that seems to fall right in line with how critics reacted to it in August of 1883.
I have some of their reviews from various news publications and I’m going to share some of them with you.
But first,I’ll give you just a tiny bit of background info on Mr. Wilde, and you let me know if you want the full story because I’d LOVE to give it to you.
Oscar Wilde was born into what we would consider an upper middle class family. His father was a successful doctor and his mother stood 6 ft tall and was said to have had a lot of style and charm. Oscar seemed to take after her in that regard.
Oscar also had a number of half siblings, because his father cheated on his mother A LOT and had children with many of his lovers.
Oscar spent the early years of his life dressed as a girl, because his mother wanted a daughter so badly that she treated him like he WAS one. And after Oscar got married, he did as his father had done, and cheated on his wife. But, unlike his father who cheated with other women…Oscar cheated on his wife with men. So, if you’re watching the Gilded Age, that should let you know why he understood just what was going on with Oscar van Rhijn and John Adams.
