Shoplifting Duo Get Arrested at ShopRite in Hoboken, NJ

Around 4:36 PM on February 6, 2024, Officers Nasir Willey, Harry Montalvo, Harold Milne, Alexander Miller, and Sheynna Vega with the Hoboken Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting involving 2 individuals that had occurred at ShopRite at 900 Madison Street. They made contact with the alleged shoplifters, who were being detained in the loss prevention office. The alleged shoplifters were identified as 26-year-old Surya Giri and 24-year-old Jalaj Mourya. The Officers asked the loss prevention officer if ShopRite wished to pursue charges against them, and he responded in the affirmative.

The loss prevention officer already had printouts itemizing the total value of the items that Surya and Jalaj had attempted to steal. The loss prevention officer noticed these two individuals on the surveillance system as he was observing someone else, and he told the officers that he was watching them for about 20 minutes before they apprehended and detained them. They allegedly filled their cart with about $216.27 worth of items, but only paid for $30.75 worth of items.

Officer Willey placed Jalaj under arrest and Officer Miller placed Surya under arrest. They were transported in the same vehicle to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. Before the officers left the store, they told the loss prevention officer that they would send him a link to upload ShopRite’s evidence against them.

At the police station, Surya and Jalaj were processed and each of them were charged with 1 count of shoplifting merchandise under 2C:20-11B(5). After they were processed at the Hoboken Police Department and handed their summonses, they were released with a summons to appear in court.

Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
