Woman Arrested After Shoplifting Attempt at Hoboken ShopRite

Around 5:38 PM on August 14, 2023, Officers Rose Kanan and Jennifer Lee with the Hoboken Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting at ShopRite on 900 Madison Street. They entered the store around and walked upstairs to the loss prevention office. In the loss prevention office, they met with the loss prevention officer as well as the alleged shoplifter, who was identified as 42-year-old Evelyn.

The loss prevention officer informed Officer Kanan that he saw the woman enter the store around 4:30 PM and later attempt to leave the store without paying for $287.78 worth of items. He reviewed the surveillance footage with the officer and provided her with an itemized receipt of the value of the items she had allegedly attempted to steal. Officer Kanan subsequently placed Evelyn under arrest for shoplifting. She was handcuffed and escorted to the patrol car.

Evelyn was transported to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. At police HQ, she was searched in more detail by Officer Kanan. Officer Lee finger printed and photographed her. Lieutenant Butler conducted a NCIC search and Evelyn was found to have no outstanding warrants. She was subsequently charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(1) and released pending her court appearance.

Court records indicate that on October 24, 2023, Evelyn entered no plea in court, and the original charge under 2C:20-11B(1) was amended to Disturbing the Peace (145-1). Evelyn also paid a total of $533 in fines.
