19-Year-Old Arrested for Assault After Scratching her Ex-Boyfriend

Around 8:54 AM on December 13, 2023, officers with the Ventnor City Police Department responded to a call of a domestic dispute with injuries at a residential address. Officer Lindsay O’Connell was the first to arrive on scene around 8:56 AM, and she made contact with a male who was the father of the 19-year-old woman’s child. Officer Ryan Bonanni and other officers arrived shortly afterwards and went to speak with the male. Officer O’Connell spoke with the 19-year-old woman, later identified as Brianna Gonzalez, to get her account of events. Officer O’Connell observed that the male had sustained injuries on his face and he was bleeding, and the Brianna admitted to scratching him.

First responders with the Ventnor City Fire Department arrived to evaluate the male, and he declined further medical attention. As the officers continued interviewing both parties over the course of their investigation, they determined that Brianna had to be arrested because the male had sustained visible injuries and this was a domestic violence situation. Officer Bonanni placed her under arrest, and she was searched by Officer O’Connell before being transported to the Ventnor City Police Department for further processing.

At police headquarters, the Brianna was finger printed, photographed, and placed in a cell as the officers completed their paperwork. After they finished processing her, she was charged with Simple Assault under 2C:12-1A and released pending her court appearance. Court records indicate that in March of 2024, Brianna pleaded guilty to Simple Assault and she was fined $758 in total.

Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
