Serial Thief Strikes Again at the Old Bridge Walmart

Future Arrest

Around 10:28 PM on March 11, 2024, Officers Fuentes and Micich with the Old Bridge Police Department were dispatched to a report of a shoplifting at Walmart located at 2825 Route 18. The officers arrived on scene and they were led to the loss prevention office, where they made contact with the loss prevention official as well as the alleged shoplifter. The shoplifter was identified as Halayna Koehn.

Halayna was with her 6-year-old daughter at the time that she was caught. The loss prevention officer determined that Halayna attempted to steal $490 worth of items from Walmart. Halayna blamed it on an issue with the Walmart scanning app and even offered to pay for the items, but they told her that is was too late.

After it was determined that Halayna had shoplifted and that Walmart wanted to press charges against her, the officers told Halayna that she was going to be placed under arrest. In order to avoid having her daughter witness this, her daughter was asked to leave the office before Officer Micich placed Halayna in handcuffs. Officers Fuentes and Micich escorted Halayna to the patrol car while the other officers stayed behind with her daughter until she could be released to a responsible adult.

Officer Micich then transported her to the Old Bridge Police Department for further processing. At police HQ, Halayna was finger printed and photographed. She was charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(1) and released pending her court appearance. Court records indicate that Halayna has multiple shoplifting arrests on her record, including a prior arrest in Raritan, NJ on November 7, 2012 and a future arrest in Middletown Township, NJ Old Bridge on July 26, 2024.

The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
