Entitled Woman Kicks Cops and Tries to Run Before Getting Arrested

Around 1:22 AM on November 23, 2024, Patrolman Joseph Calao with the Little Silver Police Department was assigned to DWI patrol and he observed a female behind the wheel of a Honda that had apparently sustained fresh front-end damages. He exited his patrol car and made contact with the female, who was later identified as Emily. Around this time, Emily exited the vehicle and became agitated. As he was speaking with her, he detected the odor of alcohol. She attempted to run away from the officers, began assaulting them when Patrolman Michael Morgan attempted to stop her. Around this time, Emily was placed under arrest.

As the officers attempted to place handcuffs on her, she kicked Patrolman Matthew McGrady. As she was being escorted to the patrol car, she also slipped out of the handcuffs. The officers placed the handcuffs back on Emily and decided to transport her back to the station before she may have another opportunity to slip out of the handcuffs.

Emily was transported to the Little Silver Police Department for further processing. Since the officers were not citing her for a DWI, the vehicle was not towed. After she was secured to the bench, Patrolman McGrady spoke with her and explained why she was placed under arrest. Since there was a physical struggle, first responders were called to the station to evaluate. After she was evaluated, Emily declined to be transported to the hospital.

Once she was calmer, Emily was photographed and fingerprinted. After they were finished processing Emily, she was provided a courtesy transport back to her residence and released pending her court appearance. Patrolman Calao charged Emily with aggravated assault on law enforcement (2C:12-1B(5)(A)) and obstruction (2C:29-1A).

Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
