19-Year-Old Girl Arrested for OVI After Crashing at Over DOUBLE the Limit

Around 3:11 AM on June 14, 2024, Officers Erin Higgins and Earl Neff with the Boardman Police Department were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle accident on Sheridan Road. Officer Higgins arrived on scene around 3:17 AM and made noticed that a black 2014 Cadillac had struck a parked 2006 Hyundai Sonata in front of a residence. Officer Higgins made contact with the female who was driving the Cadillac, and she was identified as 19-year-old Calina.

Officer Higgins asked Calina to explain what happened, but she appeared incoherent and displayed indicators of impairment. When Calina was asked if she had anything to drink, she eventually admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that evening after some initial hesitation. Based on her indicators of impairment, Officer Higgins asked Calina to perform field sobriety exercises.

Officer Higgins started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Officer Higgins observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Calina did not touch heel-to-toe on each step while using her arms for balance. The last exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Calina failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down before the test was complete.

Based on the motor vehicle crash, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Officer Higgins placed Calina under arrest for OVI. After she was placed in the patrol car, Calina asked to be evaluated by an ambulance. After she was cleared by the first responders, Officer Higgins transported Calina to the Boardman Police Department for further processing.

At the station, Officer Higgins read Calina the OBMV 2255 form, and she agreed to submit breath samples. Her breathalyzer results indicated a BAC level of 0.16%, which was more than double the legal limit of 0.08% for drivers over 21 and over 8 times the limit of 0.02% for drivers under 21. After Calina was fingerprinted and photographed, she was released to her mother pending a court appearance in the Mahoning County Court on June 18, 2024.

Officer Higgins issued the following citations to Calina:

-Operating a Vehicle Impaired (ORC 4511.19(A)(1)(a))

-Speeding (ORC 4511.21 ACDA)

-Underage Alcohol Consumption (ORC 4511.19(B)(3))
