Drunk Woman Causes Horrific Crash at DOUBLE the Limit

On December 17, 2022 at approximately 3:01 AM, Officer Jeidy Flores with the Crystal Lake Police Department observed that a 2013 Hyundai Elantra had apparently crashed at the intersection of Route 31 and Three Oaks Road. She made contact with the driver, who was later identified as Gloria Ruiz. She walked around and noticed that the vehicle had sustained severe front-end damages along with airbag deployment after striking a traffic pole.

As she was speaking with Gloria, she detected the odor of alcohol. Gloria told Officer Flores that she was heading home after leaving El Diablo Cantina in Carpentersville. She admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening before operating a motor vehicle. Officer Zachary Morse arrived on scene to assist shortly afterwards, and first responders with CLFR were called to the scene to evaluate Gloria. Gloria declined to be transported to the hospital. Based on the officers’ suspicion of impairment, Gloria was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises.

The first field sobriety exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Officer Morse observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Gloria did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and took an incorrect number of steps. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Gloria failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down before the test was complete.

Following the field sobriety exercises, the officers offered Gloria an opportunity to take a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT). The results of the PBT indicated a BAC level of 0.167%, which was approximately double the legal limit of 0.08%. Based on the motor vehicle crash, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Gloria was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.

Gloria was transported by Officer Flores to the Crystal Lake Police Department for further processing. At the station, the Warning to Motorist form was read to her, and she agreed to submit breath samples. Her breath test result indicated a BAC level of 0.147%, which was still above the legal limit.

Following the breath test, Gloria waived her Miranda rights and agreed to answer Officer Morse’s questions. She admitted to Officer Morse that she initially consumed champagne at a sushi bar in Schaumburg. She later went to Firebar in Crystal Lake and consumed 2 shots and a cocktail. Finally, she went to El Diablo Cantina in Carptnersville and consumed a double shot of tequila.

After their paperwork was completed, Gloria was released pending her court appearance on January 26, 2023 after someone else brought $300 in cash so that she could post bond.

Gloria was issued the following citations:

-Driving under the influence - alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2))

-Driving under the influence - BAC 0.08 or more (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(1))

-Driving too fast for conditions (625 ILCS 5/11-601(a))
