Sleeping and Swerving Driver Arrested for DUI at Double the Limit

On April 16, 2025 at approximately 1:52 AM, Officer Daniel Schultz with the Villa Park Police Department observed a white 2014 Lexus GS350 being driven erratically. Police had already received a phone call regarding an erratic driver, and the caller also stated that the driver was asleep at the wheel at one point. Based on his observations as well as the caller’s account of events, Officer Schultz initiated a traffic stop on Ardmore Avenue. He advised dispatch regarding the traffic stop and initiated contact with the driver, who was identified as Keara.

As he was speaking with Keara, he detected the odor of alcohol as well as the odor of burnt cannabis. She admitted to smoking cannabis earlier that evening. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Keara was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. Following the field sobriety exercises, she was asked to submit to a PBT and the results indicated a BAC level of 0.15%.

Based on her erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, her indicators of impairment, her admission to smoking earlier that evening, her inability to perform the field sobriety exercises, and the results of the PBT, Officer Schultz placed Keara under arrest for driving under the influence. She was handcuffed, placed in the patrol car, and transported to the Villa Park Police Department for further processing. A search of her vehicle incident to arrest yielded an open container of Patron tequila, and the vehicle was later towed from the scene.

At the Villa Park Police Department, the Warning to Motorist form was read to her and she agreed to provide breath samples. Her breath test results indicated a BAC level of 0.158%, which was approximately double the legal limit of 0.08%. After she was processed at the station, she was released pending her court appearance.

She was issued the following citations:

-Driving under the influence - alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2))

-Driving under the influence – alcohol 0.08 or more (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(1))

-Transportation of open alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-502(a))
