Drunk Mom Arrested for THIRD DUI After Driving With a Revoked License

On June 26, 2025 at approximately 12:54 AM, officers with the Lake Forest Police Department received a notification of a vehicle being driven erratically in Highland Park. Officer Czarnecki with the Lake Forest Police Department located a black 2006 Chevrolet matching the caller’s description in the area of Western Avenue and Illinois Road. He activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop and the driver pulled over.

Officer Czarnecki made contact with the driver of the Buick, who was identified as Maribel Zagal. Her daughter was also in the front seat of the truck. Maribel told the officer that she had celebrated her birthday and that she was heading home. She would later admit that that her license was currently revoked because of 2 prior DUIs.

As he was speaking with Maribel, he detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Maribel admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that evening, and she was eventually asked her to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises. Maribel refused to perform field sobriety exercises.

Based on the earlier report of an erratic driver, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol, and her unwillingness to perform the field sobriety exercises, Maribel was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.

Maribel’s relative arrived on scene to take custody of her daughter. Her vehicle was impounded by Ernie’s Towing. Maribel was transported to the Lake Forest Police Department for further processing. The Warning to Motorist form was read to her at the station, but she refused to submit breath samples. After the officers processed her, she was released pending her court appearance in the Lake County Courthouse.

Maribel was charged with the following:

-Driving under the influence - alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2))

-Aggravated DUI – third violation (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a))

-Aggravated DUI – third violation with a passenger under 16 (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a))

-Aggravated DUI - driving with a suspended/revoked license (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a))

-Operating an uninsured motor vehicle (625 ILCS 5/3-707(a))

-Driving with a suspended registration (625 ILCS 5/3-708)

Court records indicate that Maribel has previously been arrested for DUI in Lake County, Illinois on December 16, 2011 and January 17, 2019.
