Drunk Girl Causes a Police Pursuit Before DUI Arrest

Around 1:56 AM on April 4, 2024, Officer Tyler Vaughn with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department observed a white 2013 Volkswagen Jetta speeding excessively. He activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver did not immediately pull over. Around 2:02 AM, Officer Vaughn asked for additional units, the the driver of the Jetta eventually pulled into a parking space near the Abbey West apartments. Officer Vaughn exited his patrol car and immediately made contact with the driver, who was eventually identified as 22-year-old Mary Bullock.

Mary was instructed to exit the vehicle and detained by being placed in handcuffs as the officers conducted their investigation. As he was speaking with Mary, Officer Vaughn detected an odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Officer Torie Teets then arrived on scene and took over the investigation. She advised Mary of her Miranda rights, and Mary told Officer Teets that she was coming from Taco Bell on W Broad Street. Officer Teets asked her how much she had to drink, and Mary admitted to consuming about 2 glasses of wine at her apartment before heading over to Taco Bell. Based on her suspicion of impairment, Mary was asked to perform field sobriety exercises.

Officer Teets started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and he observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. She also observed vertical nystagmus. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Mary did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Mary failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and used her arms for balance.

Based on her erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier that evening, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Mary was placed under arrest for DUI. After placing her under arrest, Officer Teets read her the Georgia Implied Consent Notice at the scene, and she agreed to submit breath samples.

Mary was initially transported to the Downtown Precinct for the administration of the breath test. Her breath test results indicated BAC level of 0.123%, which was above the legal limit of 0.08% for drivers over the age of 21. Officer Teets then placed Mary back inside the patrol car and transported her to the Clarke County Jail for further processing. She was booked into the Clarke County Jail and issued the following summonses: DUI – Alcohol –Concentration of 0.08g or More (40-6-391(a)(1)), speeding (40-6-181), and failure to yield to emergency vehicle (40-6-74)
