Impaired Woman DESTROYS her Mom’s Jeep by Crashing Into a Truck

Around 8:40 AM on March 14, 2025, Patrolman Daniel Bowden with the Holmdel Township Police Department responded to a report of motor vehicle accident on State Highway 35 near the intersection with Centerville Road. He arrived on scene and noticed that a black 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee had struck a truck and sustained severe front-end damages. He first made contact with the driver of the truck as well as a witness who was behind the driver of the Jeep. The witness who was behind the Jeep told Patrolman Bowden that the driver was operating the vehicle in an erratic manner.

The driver of the Jeep, later identified as Erin Shell, was being evaluated by the Medstar EMS unit with the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office. Officers made contact with Erin, and they observed indicators of impairment. Erin told the officers that she was driving to the recovery center to get methadone, and that she had not slept. She denied being under the influence of alcohol, but the officers suspected that she may be impaired by another substance.

Based on their suspicion of impairment, Erin was asked to perform field sobriety exercises. Patrolman Bowden started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Patrolman Bowden observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. He also observed vertical gaze nystagmus. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and turn test, Erin did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Erin failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down multiple times before the test was complete.

Based on the motor vehicle crash, her indicators of impairment, and her inability to satisfactorily complete the field sobriety exercises, Erin was placed under arrest for DWI. The Jeep was impounded by for a 12-hour hold according to John’s Law. First responders with Medstar EMS transported Erin to Bayshore Medical Center for further evaluation. At the hospital, Erin submitted a urine sample and consented to a blood draw. Erin was eventually released from custody and into the care of hospital personnel.

Patrolman Bowden issued Erin the following traffic tickets:

-Operating under the influence (39:4-50)

-Reckless driving (39:4-96)

-Careless driving (39:4-97)

-Following too closely (39:4-89)

-Obstructing traffic (39:4-56)

-Use/influence of CDS (2C:35-10B(1))

Court records indicate that on November 5, 2025, Erin was found guilty of reckless driving and offered a conditional dismissal on her charge of use/influence of CDS. As a result of her conviction, Erin’s license was revoked for 180 days and she had to pay a total of $923 in fines. The other 5 citations were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
