Drunk Girl DESTROYS a Mailbox at OVER TRIPLE THE LIMIT

Around 9:17 PM on March 1, 2023, Patrolman Kristopher Burke with the Barnegat Township Police Department observed a white 2015 Ford Explorer swerving after turning onto Nautilus Drive from W Bay Avenue. He eventually activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, and the driver proceeded to pull over in front of 92 Nautilus Drive. As the driver was pulling over, she struck the mailbox in front of the house. He then exited his patrol car to make contact with the driver, who was identified as 22-year-old Michayla Mullin.

As he was speaking with Michayla, he detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. She told Patrolman Summers that her and her girlfriend Brianna Iacovelli were coming from work. Michayla worked at the Buy Rite Wine & Liquor store in Waretown, New Jersey. Despite multiple open containers inside the vehicle and her indicators of impairment, Michayla denied consuming any alcohol earlier that evening. Based on his suspicion of impairment though, Patrolman Burke eventually asked Michayla to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises after Patrolmen Santos and Peragine arrived on scene to assist.

Patrolman Sawyer started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, he observed 6/6 indicators of impairment. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Michayla failed to touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand, Michayla failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down multiple times before the test was complete. The final exercise was the Lack of Convergence test.

Based on her erratic driving, the motor vehicle crash, the odor of alcohol, and her inability to satisfactorily perform the field sobriety exercises, Michayla was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. The vehicle was released to her girlfriend’s mother Kristina Iacovelli after she arrived on scene to retrieve it. Patrolman Burke transported Michayla to the Barnegat Township Police Department for further processing.

At the station, the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators was read to Michayla, and she agreed to submit breath samples. Michayla’s Alcotest results indicated a BAC level of 0.29%, which was more than triple the legal limit of 0.08%. After the officers were finished with processing Michayla, she eventually released to a sober adult pending her court appearance after he signed the Potential Liability Warning form on Michayla’s behalf.

She was issued the following citations:

-Operating under the influence (39:4-50)

-Reckless driving (39:4-96)

-Careless driving (39:4-97)

-Traffic on marked lanes (39:4-88)

-Open Container (39:4-51A.B)

-Throw debris from a vehicle (39:4-64(A))

On September 20, 2023, Michayla was found guilty of operating under the influence and . As a result of her convictions, Michayla had to use an ignition interlock device for 9 months, spend 12 hours at an intoxicated driver resource center, and pay a total of $830 in fines. The other 5 citations were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Michayla was later arrested again for disorderly conduct (2C:33-2A(1)) in Seaside Heights, New Jersey on July 4, 2023.
