Do you think you are tone deaf? You probably aren't. Less than 4% of the population has true tone deafness. Even if you are one of the rare individuals with congenital amusia it can still be improved (see link below). For most pitch strugglers out there, you simply haven't learned how to match pitch or what it means to match pitch. This video describes a long standing, tried and true method for learning pitch awareness and pitch matching.

In order to learn to match pitch, we first need to understand what it means to match pitch. There is a distinct sensory experience called "unison". Unison is our guiding light to forever fixing our "tone deafness". Unison is an experience where the two pitches fuse because they are no longer different. This is what it means to match pitch. Once you experience this for yourself, it's hard to forget!

The easiest method to experience pitch and unison is by singing along with a pitch drone. A drone is a constant, unwavering sound. The unwavering pitch acts an anchor for us to explore pitch against. Singing against a drone has been a staple of numerous musical traditions across the world including early Western music, Indian classical music, and much more. This is because when we sing against a drone, a wonderful phenomenon called beat interference becomes most audible. Acoustic beats are created from the difference between two pitches. They sound like wobbles in the sound. The closer we get to unison and matching pitch, the slower the beats become. The further away we get, the faster they become.

After experiencing unison several times, singing against the drone, and practicing hearing pitch inside your head -- you will almost never have any problems matching pitch ever again.
