Funny how history seems to repeat itself? Albeit in new ways.
The ‘Scopes Monkey Trial’ reminds us of the need to protect our first amendment freedom. Gregg Jarrett’s new book “Trial of the Century” highlights the importance of freedom at a new and challenging point in time.
Nearly a century ago, famed liberal attorney Clarence Darrow defended the schoolteacher John Scopes in a trial that captivated the nation. Scopes had dared to teach evolution in a Tennessee high school science class. Discussion of evolution in classrooms was against Tennessee law at the time — and Darrow’s case against William Jennings Bryan (a three time presidential candidate) resulted in a “blockbuster legal proceeding that brought the world’s attention to the small town of Dayton, Tennessee.”
What ensued, Gregg Jarrett tells me, was a major legal spectacle that had an enormous effect on the future of our nation.
The protection of speech — our first amendment — was at risk…
In today’s society of ‘cancel culture’ we face similar threats. If only one opinion is to be heard — in school, in literature, or at work — we are at risk of losing the freedoms our nation so depend upon.
This is an important book — and written by my longtime friend who has devoted his career to the study of law and how it intersects with journalism. Important discussion at a critical time.
