11:41Now PlayingA simple internet search would suggest that the US never promised Russia that it would not expand NATO. But, as they say, don't believe everything you read online. In this clip from The Trish Regan Show, I'm returning to primary sources… Including an interview with the former ambassador to the USSR, George Kennan.
In May 1998, at age 94, Kennan told New York Times reporter Tom Friedman that NATO and the US were making a massive mistake. According to the late Kennan (who began his service in The State Department in 1926), the Clinton team really had no appreciation for Russian culture and, thus, was at risk of making grave mistakes - mistakes from which the US could never quite recover. Kennan believed any encroachment towards Russia by NATO would be viewed by Russia as a threat.
It's fascinating to reread these comments in light of my former Fox News colleague, Tucker Carlson's recent interview with Vladimir Putin.

Remember - George Kennan was an old school realist from the realism school of political science theory. Today, his words and predictions (as well as the warnings of Tom Friedman) are coming back to haunt us.
