Alex Murdaugh reportedly told his attorneys he hired a man to shoot him in the head so Murdaugh's surviving son would receive a $10 million insurance payout.
On Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021, SLED announced the arrest of Curtis Edward Smith, accused of being Murdaugh's accomplice. Smith is charged with assisted suicide; assault and battery; pointing a firearm; insurance fraud; and conspiracy. Smith is reportedly a former client of Murdaugh's.
Murdaugh is likely to face charges, his attorneys have said.
Alex Murdaugh was hospitalized on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2021. He said he was changing a tire on the side of the road when a truck drove by, turned around, and someone shot at him, grazing his head. The same weekend, Murdaugh was accused of misappropriation of funds from his own law offices, and Murdaugh later announced he has entered rehab.
Alex Murdaugh discovered the bodies of his younger son Paul and his wife Maggie on their South Carolina property in June. Both victims were shot to death. No arrests have been made in the double-homicide case.
