30:09Now PlayingIn this episode of Crime Watch Daily Updates: Adrian Loya served with Lisa Berlanga in the United States Coast Guard while stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, and the two became fast friends even though he was her superior. Also in the Coast Guard was the love of Lisa’s life, Anna Trubnikova.
Anna and Lisa got married, but Anna wasn’t fond of Lisa and Adrian’s relationship. Then, one night while Anna was out of town, Lisa and Adrian hung out at her house. Lisa had supposedly been drinking before Adrian arrived, and after watching some TV, she tried to kiss him.
As the night went on, she tried again, even putting her hand on his arm. Little did she know how big of an impact that little gesture would have. Adrian believed he had been sexually assaulted.
Adrian later wrote Lisa a lengthy letter about what she allegedly did to him, and he reported her to Coast Guard investigators. Coast Guard officials moved Adrian to Virginia as a disciplinary action, and Anna and Lisa ended up in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Adrian got passed over for a promotion, and he pointed the finger at Lisa, believing his lack of career advancement was her fault.
He went so far as to write a detailed 250-page plan and description as to why he hated Lisa and how he planned to kill her, which he titled “Loya Wars.”
In the early hours of February 5, 2015, Adrian drove to Anna and Lisa’s condo, and began his reign of terror. He arrived wearing tactical gear and set his car on fire. He even placed what appeared to be an explosive device next to the vehicle.
Adrian broke his way into Lisa and Anna’s house and barged into their room. Anna and Lisa managed to shield themselves with their mattress, but it wasn’t enough. Adrian fired several rounds into the mattress, hitting Lisa 11 times and Anna four. Lisa died from her wounds, and Anna was seriously injured.
One officer went towards the condo and was shot in the back by Adrian. He eventually surrendered and was taken into custody. Adrian told the police everything and spoke about it as if he had completed a homework assignment.
Adrian went to trial in 2017 and his attorneys argued he was not guilty by reason of mental defect. He was convicted in September 2017 of murder and several other charges. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. In 2020, Adrian appealed his conviction, but the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court affirmed the lower court’s ruling.
Let’s take a look back at the case of a married couple’s life that was shattered by a desire for revenge.
