Alexis Dekany was a student at the University of Akron in Ohio—studying criminal justice when she met Eric Paull. He was one of her professors and also happened to be a sergeant with the Akron Police Department. The two became friends and eventually formed a romantic relationship.
Eric reportedly started becoming controlling and often threatened to kill Alexis. They eventually broke up, and she started dating someone new. And Eric didn’t like that.
She caught him trying to break into her apartment. Another time, he did a background check on her new boyfriend and threatened to kill him.
On Thanksgiving day of 2014, Eric went to Alexis’ house and allegedly strangled and sexually assaulted her while her young son was sleeping in a nearby room.
She didn’t report it to the police because Eric convinced her —he told her he could get away with it.
Months later, Alexis was at a friend’s house when Eric tried forcing his way inside. Ultimately
Alexis obtained a protection order against him, but he violated it several times.
Eric Paul eventually pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, menacing by stalking, and other charges. In October 2015, a judge sentenced him to four years in prison.
In November 2016, he was granted early release and sentenced to five years of probation with GPS monitoring.
