In December 2020, 4-year-old Jessica Mast was found dead at a home in Benton County, Missouri. She had been beaten, abused, and submerged in an ice-cold pond as part of an alleged “religious ceremony” to “remove a demon.”
This attempted exorcism and her heinous beatings killed her. She was covered in bruises.
Jessica’s parents, James and Mary Mast, as well as the neighbors who reportedly beat her, Ethan Mast and Kourtney Aumen, were all arrested on charges connected to her death. Jessica Mast is not related to the neighbor Ethan Mast, though their families attended the same church.
In February 2022, Ethan pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and in January 2023, Jessica’s mother, Mary, also pleaded guilty to first-degree child endangerment. Prosecutors recommended she spend five years behind bars.
