"So what we have happening in Syria right now are two wars—and I’ll make this very short. One is the war against ISIS, al-Qaeda and these groups that attacked us on 9/11, who’ve continued to wage war against us. We need to continue to work with partners and allies to press against them and to defeat them.
"The second war is an illegal and counterproductive war to overthrow the Syrian government of Assad. The U.S. policy currently to do that not only is illegal because the American people and Congress have not declared war against the sovereign government, but it’s counterproductive because it works towards the exact same goal of ISIS, of al-Qaeda. They’re looking to take over this government of Syria and establish their caliphate, presenting a greater threat to the region, as well as to the United States and the rest of the world."
