Rep. Tulsi Gabbard in Michigan Explaining Her Endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders

In Michigan yesterday to speak before a huge political rally for presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders, congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard was interviewed on MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews".

Asked by Matthews why she was supporting Sanders, Tulsi said, "As a veteran, someone who served in the Middle East, I know how much is at stake in this election as we select who out next commander in-chief will be. I support Bernie Sanders because it’s important that we have a commander in-chief who exercises good judgement, who has foresight, who has the intelligence to be able to make the right decisions about where and when we use our American military power and, just as importantly, where and when we don’t use that power."

"War is real. It affects our lives not only for those who serve overseas but lives here at home because of the trillions of dollars that we’ve wasted in this interventionist regime change wars that Hillary Clinton has supported and championed in many different ways in Iraq, in Libya and now in Syria. Now we are faced with situations like we’ve seen in Flint, the heartbreaking crumbling infrastructure that’s ruining so many people’s lives with the water crisis that they’re facing, and similar challenges across the country. We need to keep those resources here at home so that we can nation build and strengthen our own country."

When Matthews asked, "Why did Hillary Clinton vote for the Iraq war?", Tulsi responded: "That’s a good question that I think people should ask her again to tell us why she voted for that Iraq war. She has said that she’s regretted it but time and time again, whether it’s her championing the military overthrow of Ghaddafi in Libya, pushing the Obama administration to conduct that war--resulting in a totally failed state, thousands of lives lost and now ISIS and al-Qaeda having a stronghold there--or present day, pushing for the war in Syria, and promising to escalate that war if she is elected President--which deeply concerns me, as it should all of us."

Matthews concluded the interview with these words: "I agree with every single word you just spoke and I hope you have an influence in this next administration no matter who wins."
