Help Me Survive This Deadly Love: Russia's Weaponization of Homophobia and The People it Affects

In December 2022, the State Duma adopted a new version of the law “on LGBTQ+ propaganda”, strengthening a similar repressive law from 2013. Thus, Russia has begun a new, more intense program of repression against LGBTQ+ people.

There are millions of queer people affected by these two laws. For a whole decade since 2013, they have adapted to an increasingly difficult environment, fought for their rights as best they could, and still continued to live their everyday lives, create communities and spaces. Despite all the prohibitions, Russia continues to have an active queer community.

This report is about these people, not just about Russia's use of homophobia as a political weapon. Queer people are entrepreneurs, artists, politicians, activists, mothers, journalists, musicians, workers, teachers, influencers, academics and your neighbors, friends and colleagues. This report is about them.
