In 2004 the oil tycoon and richest man in Russia Mikhail Khodorkovsky and his business partner Platon Lebedev were imprisoned. This became known as the YUKOS case — a landmark lawsuit in Putin's Russia as it ushered in the end of Russian business holding any power in the country. Anna Nemzer looks at this event as the beginning of Putin's suppression of political rivals as it is widely believed that Khodorkovsky had political ambitions.
