Corey Booker (D-NJ) made a powerful argument as to why, after a century of trying, the "evil peculiar to America" known as lynching should be made a federal crime in the United States. And, by referencing and quoting from the historical record, he made it impossible for any of his colleagues to vote against it. Moments later the bill, also sponsored by sponsored by Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), passed by unanimous consent.
More than 200 anti-lynching bills had been introduced to Congress, all of which have been stalled or voted down. Nearly 5,000 Americans have been lynched in the name of voter suppression and white supremacy, 3/4 of whom were African American.
