Earlier this month, a bipartisan border security bill ended up dead on arrival on Capitol Hill, succumbing to pressure from former President Donald Trump. The latest failure came as tens of thousands of migrants continue to cross the border weekly, with little hope for jobs, permanent housing and opportunities.

Is there a path forward for immigration, border security and asylum reform? While most Americans agree change is needed, the paths they seek differ greatly.

On one side: Doug Ducey, the former Republican governor of Arizona, who experienced a surge of migrants under three presidents over his eight years in office and joined some other border state governors in busing migrants north. On the other side: former Representative Luis Gutiérrez, an Illinois Democrat and long standing critic of American immigration policies and who has led a nationwide effort to help undocumented immigrants become naturalized citizens.
