as posted by the channelThe Momentum for Change ICT Solutions event at COP22 featured a roundtable discussion by thought leaders on the enabling role of ICT in tackling climate change, key findings of the #SystemTransformation report, the role of ICT in achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the need for joint action.
According to the #SystemTransformation report released in 2016 by the Global e-Sustainability Initiative and Accenture, ICT solutions could drive market transformation for renewables and cut carbon emissions by 20% by 2030. The report also shows that the ICT sector can play a vital role in helping achieve the objectives of the 17 SDGs by 2030. ICT sector companies could realize USD 2.1 trillion in additional annual revenue by 2030 from services that directly contribute to SDG achievement. This includes USD 400 billion per year from connecting an additional 2.5 billion people to communication services by 2030. Additionally, USD 1.7 trillion can be realized from digital solutions contributing towards SDG achievement, including eCommerce (USD 580 billion), eWork (USD 537 billion), smart buildings (USD 200 billion), eGovernment (USD 86 billion), and online learning (USD 75 billion).
