A person accused of a crime can be held pending trial, or can released, either with or without conditions. One of those conditions is often the payment of cold, hard cash. Although the law requires the court to take into consideration the ability of the defendant to pay (among other considerations), this does not seem to always be done. It has become such a problem that some jurisdictions are experimenting with elimination of cash bail, which leads to its own set of problems (see, e.g., the Jay Vasquez Paulino incident in NY, which I will cover in more detail in the future).
Today, we review one such situation out of Giles County, Tennessee, and review what happens when the bail is too damn high. Also, I sing (poorly) for no particular reason.
