en months after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of the Oxford High School shooter, is asking a judge to throw out her historic conviction, arguing she was the target of an overreaching prosecution that withheld critical evidence. Specifically, Crumbley claims prosecutors "deliberately" failed to disclose secret proffer agreements made with two school officials who testified against her. These agreements, first revealed by the Free Press in March, shielded the officials from having their statements to investigators used against them—despite their roles drawing scrutiny over decisions involving the shooter.
In a new court filing, Crumbley’s appellate lawyer asserts that these witnesses had a motive to testify in a way that shifted responsibility away from themselves and onto Crumbley, but the jury was never informed of this potential bias. He argues the prosecution’s failure to disclose these agreements was unlawful and deprived the defense of crucial evidence that could have influenced the verdict. By keeping this information from the defense, the filing alleges, prosecutors ensured the jury never heard the full story behind the witnesses’ testimony.
