Massachusetts resident Karen Read, 45, is on retrial for second-degree murder and related charges in the January 29, 2022 death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe III, after her first trial ended in a hung jury on July 1, 2024. Read faces counts of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence, and leaving the scene following allegations she struck O’Keefe with her Lexus SUV outside a Canton home amid a snowstorm, evidence bolstered by taillight fragments found on his body and witness claims that Read muttered “I hit him” upon discovery. Prosecutors have introduced bar surveillance footage showing an hours-earlier altercation between O’Keefe and ATF agent Brian Higgins to suggest motive, while the defense counters with expert testimony from Dr. Marie Russell that the victim’s wounds are consistent with dog bites and accuses investigators of mishandling evidence in a cover-up. Judge Beverly Cannone has denied defense motions for mistrial and to dismiss key charges, keeping the retrial on track, even as O’Keefe’s family pursues a parallel civil wrongful-death lawsuit naming Read and two Canton bars, Waterfall Bar & Grille and C.F. McCarthy’s—with Read’s deposition postponed until after the criminal verdict.
