1:11Now PlayingIn June 1989, Sr. Thea Bowman gave an address to the U.S. Catholic Bishops on Black spiritualty and the ways in which the U.S. Catholic Church can stand in solidarity with all people of good will, both in the U.S. and abroad. Throughout her life, Sr. Thea used her gifts of preaching, storytelling, and singing to give witness to God’s love. She was a powerful advocate against racism and encouraged dialogue, the breaking down of racial barriers, and encounter with the joy of the Gospel. Although she was diagnosed with cancer in 1984, she continued her mission and speaking engagements, including the address to the U.S. bishops in 1989.
