3rd Annual Dialogue on War Legacies and Peace in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia
This year marks a significant milestone as we reflect on the first anniversary of the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership upgrade, underscoring a commitment to addressing war legacies and deepening ties through forward-looking initiatives. Postwar reconciliation has undergirded bilateral and multilateral relations, transforming past challenges into pathways for lasting peace. Humanitarian efforts among governments, civil society and veterans’ organizations have tackled issues such as locating missing personnel, mitigating Agent Orange’s effects and clearing unexploded ordnance. Additionally, people-to-people exchanges, especially among young leaders and Southeast Asian Americans, continue to build trust and understanding across societies.
On September 10, USIP hosted the first part of a two-part livestream of the Institute’s Dialogue on War Legacies and Peace, an annual event bringing government and non-governmental experts together to discuss the full range of war legacy issues and U.S. relations with Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
The event brought together diplomats, advocates and researchers to discuss how bilateral partnerships, including cooperation on war legacy issues, contributes to building a culture of peace while drawing lessons from U.S. engagement in Southeast Asia that could apply to conflicts elsewhere in the world. Roundtable discussions explored in-depth how Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians are healing from wartime suffering and building a future based on trust and shared interests.
