I have read a surprising amount of self-help books, but there is one concept found in many of these books that I find ever so slightly objectionable. It claims that we have an "authentic self" that underlies our superficial reality, and that if we only uncover and mimic this true self, then we will achieve peace and extreme material success. But I am incredibly sceptical of this simple picture of authenticity, and today I would like to examine why.
