as posted by the channelLos Alamos is a city of achievers — some of the nation’s greatest minds reside in the New Mexico city, where 42 percent of the adult population has an advanced degree, according to 2014 neighborhood survey data. But even in a highly-educated community, there can be a tendency to fall back on a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching — and that doesn’t work for every student.
“We have one picture of success and that’s the number of AP courses you take and going to the best colleges. Our kids need autonomy, a say in their learning and a sense of belonging,” says teacher, Michele Altherr. That’s why programs like the Youth Conservation Corps are trying to change the way the city’s residents think about achievement by connecting students with the community and the environment.
