as posted by the channelThis Houston high school was called a “throw-away school,” principal Bertie Simmons recalls. While graduation rates have risen, helping erase that title, many students are still not college ready. As Furr develops into a Super School, it will raise the level of learning to be more rigorous, relevant and personalized, including letting students spend part of their time studying what they want to study — anything from wolves to immigration law.
Simmons came out of retirement in 2013 at the age of 78 to lead the troubled school, which she says had at least 12 gangs. “I want someone to start caring about underserved kids, not just giving lip service,” Simmons says.
