Every day, pilots from around the world depend on the air traffic controllers at Gander International Airport to help them navigate the North Atlantic. On September 11th, the US airspace was closed after the terrorist attacks and 38 planes were grounded in Gander. In the midst of mass tragedy, this tiny Canadian town showed its huge heart. Over a five-day period, the people of Gander opened up their homes to nearly 7,000 stranded passengers until air traffic resumed.
