OJAI, CALIFORNIA - A 200-pound bear lay on a treatment table hundreds of miles from where she had been found with severe burns from the Thomas Fire.
Barely able to walk on burned paws, the bear had wandered into a backyard near Ojai just days after the Thomas Fire ignited. Seeing a chance at survival, a team drove the bear to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s lab in Rancho Cordova.
Once there, veterinarians used homemade salves and sterilized fish skin to heal her paws, where the pads had completely burned away, leaving red, raw wounds.
