Emily, 18, was born with a defect called Chiari malformation which causes a part of her brain to push on her spinal cord. If left untreated, it can lead to brain damage, and loss in mental and physical abilities. Emily has undergone 31 surgeries at Seattle Children’s to manage her complex condition, but continues to suffer from chronic pain that has led her to experience severe depression and anxiety. Knowing Emily’s love of animals, her parents surprised her with a 5-pound piglet to help her with her emotional struggles. The two formed a close bond that helped transform her sadness to feelings of optimism. With her pig – Pita Peppa Lepew – by her side, Emily found a source of strength when she needed it most.
