Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, President Joe Biden's nominee to the Supreme Court, faced off Democratic and Republican senators on Monday for the first in a marathon series of hearings that will determine whether she will make history as the first Black female justice on the high court.
While the real fireworks are likely to be on display Tuesday and Wednesday - when senators will question the judge directly - opening statements showed that lines of support and objection are already being drawn up. Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee emphasized Jackson's role in the greater history of the Supreme Court, which has never had a Black woman as a justice.
