About 100,000 square miles, or one-third of the country, are underwater, according to Sherry Rehman, Pakistan’s climate minister. Flood damage is estimated at $10 billion, or 4% of the nation's gross domestic product, said planning minister Ahsan Iqbal.
"Pakistan has never seen an unbroken cycle of monsoons like this," said Rehman on Twitter. "Eight weeks of non-stop torrents have left huge swathes of the country under water." Climate change is blamed as the cause of the heavy rain. Recent monsoons have started earlier and have been heavier than usual. Similar floods killed nearly 2,000 people in 2010.
