The closing of “Phantom” would mean the longest-running show crown would go to “Chicago,” which started in 1996. “The Lion King” is next, having begun performances in 1997. "Phantom" overtook "Cats" on Broadway with its 7,486th performance on Jan. 9, 2006.
"Phantom" won more than 70 major theatre awards during its history. The list includes three Olivier Awards, five Outer Critic Circle Awards, and an Evening Standard Award. The production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and seven Drama Desk Awards in the year it opened.
