Sands' remains were found by civilian hikers Saturday morning in the Mt. Baldy wilderness, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's office said in a press release shared Tuesday. Sands was reported missing on a trail on Mt. Baldy.
Search and rescue crews began looking for Sands on Saturday, but had to suspend the ground search because of trail conditions and avalanche risks, San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman Gloria Huerta said.
The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results.
