The case pits 16 young Montanans against the state in the first constitutional climate trial in US history. Attorneys for the plaintiffs argued that the state’s pro-fossil fuel policies endanger their health and livelihoods while also threatening future generations. State officials, meanwhile, contend that Montana’s contributions to global warming are a drop in the bucket compared to other polluters and that they should not be held accountable.
