7:00:46Now PlayingHurricane Helene strengthened into a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 120 mph Thursday as it roared toward landfall and likely devastation along Florida's Gulf Coast.
The National Hurricane Center, which at its 2 p.m. ET update had reported Helene's sustained winds as high as 110 mph − a mile shy of Category 3 status − tweeted about the fast increase 25 minutes later.
A forecast by the NHC has shown the hurricane approaching landfall Thursday night with sustained winds near 115 mph, but that could be upgraded. AccuWeather forecasters were predicting Helene would reach Category 4 strength − winds of 131 to 155 mph − in the Gulf of Mexico and maintain that intensity into landfall.
